Save the Bilby

With the incredible assistance of many volunteers and funded by generous donations from people across Australia, a 25 square kilometre predator and feral animal proof enclosure was offically opened at Currawinya National Park, Easter 2001.

Captive-bred bilbies are to be released into the enclosure late 2001.

This ambitious program to re-establish breeding population of bilbies at Currawinya National Park is part of the national strategy to recover this endangered species.

Currawinya was selected as the reintroduction site because bilbies once lived there and it is roughly the centre of the bilbies former geographical range in eastern Australia.

It is also a large park with permanent staff and the weather conditions at Currawinya are expected to provide bilbies with more reliable and diverse food supply than other areas in the arid zone.
